Khmer antiquities, removed from Cambodia over the past six decades

Khmer Art Overseas: Khmer antiquities, removed from Cambodia over the past six decades, by fair means or foul, though generally the latter, are still being sold in full view of authorities in Europe and elsewhere, as we can see with another public auction at Galerie Zacke, an auction house based in Vienna, Austria, which will take place on 2 June. Just half a dozen Khmer artifacts are scheduled to go under the auctioneers’ gavel on this occasion,

coming from private collectors, with provenance back to the 1970s, when the looting of Cambodia’s ancient temples was well underway by gangs of thieves with shopping lists of sculptures supplied by dealers like Douglas Latchford, across the border in Thailand. A veneer of respectability has been added with previous sales at top sellers such as Christie’s, but they too are as culpable as the smaller auction houses and galleries in allowing sales without fully-researched due diligence undertaken on the art pieces being sold. Cambodia officially stopped the sale of ancient artworks from 1950 and without export papers allowing them to leave the kingdom, all Khmer artifacts have left the country illegally.
Founded more than fifty years ago in Vienna, Galerie Zacke have been auctioning Asian art since 1995. Generally speaking, their sale prices are relatively low and I don’t know if the works of art are originals or contemporary antiquities, though the auction house indicate they are authentic. This selling-off of Cambodia’s historical legacy, in full view of everyone, must come to a halt. No sale of authentic Khmer antiquities should take place, at any auctioneers or galleries, without definitive proof of export from Cambodia. If such evidence cannot be produced, the artifacts should be confiscated by authorities, awaiting repatriation to the kingdom.
