Sculpture from the Angkor National Museum:
One of the best sandstone sculptures of one of the most famous animals in Khmer mythology, can now be found at the entrance to the Angkor National Museum. I refer to Nandin (aka Nandi),
the sacred white humped bull and mount of the god Shiva. This fabulous exhibit was uncovered in the northeast corner of the Angkor temple of Chau Say Tevoda by Henri Marchal during Γcole franΓ§aise d'ExtrΓͺme-Orient clearance work at the site at the beginning of 1926. The temple was built in the middle of the 12th century under the auspices of Suryavarman II and dedicated to Shiva, so it’s only right that his favoured vehicle and gate-guardian should take pride of place. Most images of Nandin are on bas-reliefs and lintels, usually being ridden by both Shiva and his wife, Uma, while the temple of Preah Ko in Roluos is dedicated to the bull itself. The sculpture on display shows a powerful and dynamic posture, plus neck garlands, with one leg slightly raised and the other three resting under the animal.
